I interviewed Spider, lead singer of Powerman 5000 (and Rob Zombie's brother if you haven't heard) before this show and he was sick so they went on first instead of second.
Powerman 5000 rock pretty hard and fast. Thrashy, funky, sludge it is, but its pretty good. Their songs are about freaks, cars, and death of course, and Spider screams his way through lots of the vocals. Although he was sick he still manages to do a dy namic set mostly because they kept it short and did their best songs.
They opened with "20 Miles to Texas 25 to Hell," which is slower and funky to get people warmed up. Then they slid into a hot version of "Tokyo Vigilante #1," which got a huge pit going. Not letting up at all they did "Neckbone." "Neckbone" only made everybody thrash around more.
Spider took a break to tell everybody that his doctor warned him that if he sang tonight he'd be out for a week, but he didn't care because this was as close to Boston as he's been in a while.
The band slipped into a funky version of "A Swim with the Sharks" which went on for a good 10 minutes. They closed out the show with "Car Crash," and two songs I didn't know (sorry).
Powerman 5000's CD "Mega!! Kung Fu Radio" is like available everywhere. They'll have another out in '98, so keep an eye out for them.
Buck-O-Nine was next. California ska-punk with a three piece horn section. It was the first time I've seen them, but I think they've been around for a while. I didn't know any of their songs, but they were still pretty good. They have a loose sound, a nd tend to pogo around the stage instead of play their instruments, but it was fun. Powerman 5000 band members came out in the middle of their set to douse them with silly string. They nailed everybody, but it just made for some decent fun to go with th e music.
Just before Primus came out I was informed that the photo pass I had wasn't good for Primus. It was a Primus pass, but I couldn't take photos of the band- whatever. I went to the back to protect my camera and got drunk. I like Primus- they're fun to bou nce around to, and Les has some of the old Frank Zappa in him so I have to respect him. I had like 8 or 9 drinks, did the pogo when I wanted, and just hung out. I didn't bother taking notes, I figured I'd have no photos so what was the point. It was a good set, lots from the "Brown" CD, lots of old stuff. Ya know- Primus sucks.....
